(April 29, 2014) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is alerting commuters and travelers to use extreme caution and be extra vigilant as flooding rains are possible through Thursday.  SHA maintenance crews are proactively cleaning drainage systems on roadsides and bridges, readying high water signs and overhead message signs with high water messaging.  Additionally, SHA is getting chainsaws and chippers ready for any fallen tree limbs and has secured tree professionals in each county to be on standby status.  Crews are clearing debris from under bridges as well to enable proper drainage.

“Maryland is in the path of several storms that have already wreaked havoc on other States so we are keeping a close eye on the track of the storms,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. “SHA recommends that motorists remain vigilant for any flooding-related problems on the roadway by logging onto www.md511.org.”

The National Weather Service is forecasting the potential for flooding throughout the Maryland.  It is critical to understand that most vehicles will float in just two feet of water so never try to cross areas of running water.

Motorists are reminded that if traffic signals are out at an intersection, ALL directions must come to a complete stop and treat the intersection like a four-way stop.  Additionally, low-beam headlights are required when windshield wipers are in operation.

• Here are some tips to keep in mind if caught driving in severe weather:

• Never attempt to cross flooded road ways – “Turn around! Don’t drown.”

• Keep gas tanks full in case of unexpected and possible lengthy detours;

• Keep a charged cellphone handy, but don’t use while driving;

• Never try to move a tree branches that have been entangled in electrical wires or try to move a fallen electrical or communication cable from the travel lanes;

• Be on alert for animals, such as deer, crossing the roads as they flee flooded areas;

• Ensure that windshield wipers and all headlights, hazard lights and turn signals are in proper working order; and

• Allow extra braking distance.
