New Ramp Movement and New Traffic Signal at I-695/Harford Road Interchange Begins Full Operation Friday Morning, September 2

(August 30, 2016) – The $32 million I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) widening project between MD 41 (Perring Parkway) and MD 147 (Harford Road) in Parkville, Baltimore County has reached a major milestone.  Beginning 10 p.m. Thursday night, September 1, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will close the “cloverleaf” loop ramp from eastbound I-695 (Beltway inner loop) to northbound Harford Road; then move traffic onto a widened ramp from I-695 that will provide access to both directions of Harford Road.  SHA’s contractor installed a signal on Harford Road to control exiting northbound traffic. Weather permitting, crews will have the new interchange traffic pattern in place for Friday morning rush hour.

“The new traffic pattern will improve safety by eliminating a short, congested traffic weave/merge area,” said Acting District Engineer Wendy Wolcott.  “SHA encourages motorists traveling between Parkville and Carney to stay alert for changing traffic conditions as drivers adjust to the new interchange ramp location and the new traffic signal on Harford Road.”

The cloverleaf loop ramp, built as part of the original Baltimore Beltway construction in the early 1960’s, will be permanently closed and removed.  After September 1, all motorists traveling from eastbound I-695 to southbound and northbound Harford Road will use the same exit ramp.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

A complete listing of current roadway construction projects is included in e-Road Ready 2016, the online brochure. Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
