Safety and Resurfacing Project in Gaithersburg; Motorists Urged to Allow Extra Travel Time

(June 23, 2017) – A smoother ride is on the way for drivers who travel on MD 28 (Darnestown Road) in Montgomery County. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is starting work on a $2.5 million safety and resurfacing project on MD 28 between MD 124 (Quince Orchard Road) and Argosy Drive in Gaithersburg. Weather and progress permitting, the nearly two mile project will be complete by the end of the year.

In addition to the resurfacing and applying new pavement markings, crews will:

• Reconstruct sidewalks, sidewalk ramps and driveways for Americans with Disability Act  (ADA) compliance;

• Replace damaged and deteriorated curb and gutter;

• Replace and upgrade guardrail;

• Clean inlets and pipes for better roadway drainage; and

• Replace concrete bus pads.

To complete all phases of work, crews are permitted to close one lane on westbound MD 28 Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., one eastbound lane between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Motorists can also expect a single lane closure in both directions Sundays through Friday mornings between 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.  Equipment used for construction may be disruptive. Currently, crews are performing sidewalk, sidewalk ramp and curb/gutter work during daytime work hours.

SHA’s contractor for the work is Francis O. Day Company, Inc. of Rockville. More than 26,000 vehicles use this section of MD 28 daily.
