Six-Month Detour Expected While Work is Underway
(July 1, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) will host an informational public open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at the Potomac Heights Volunteer Fire Department, 73 Glymont Road, Indian Head, to share information about a project to replace the pipe culvert that carries a branch of Mattawoman Creek beneath MD 225 (Hawthorne Road) in Charles County. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2026 and is expected to be completed in winter 2026-2027.
The project will replace the culvert and resurface the portion of MD 225 that crosses over the creek. This work will improve safety and mobility and reduce future maintenance needs for the existing structure, which was built in 1960.
To ensure a safe and efficient work zone, a portion of MD 225 will be closed during construction and a detour will be in place for approximately six months. The detour will route northbound and southbound motorists via MD 224 (Livingston Road), MD 227 (Livingston Road) and MD 210 (Indian Head Highway). See map below.

The July 8 open house is an opportunity for residents and commuters to learn more about the project and detour routes, enabling them to better plan their travel in the area. Attendees will be able to view maps and displays, speak with representatives from the State Highway Administration and provide feedback. There will be no formal presentation. Attendees can arrive at their convenience, review the displays, and talk with staff. Project materials will also be available online after the event on the
Project Portal page.
