Upgrades Include a New Traffic Signal, Sidewalks and Wider Turn Lanes

(August 4, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a sidewalk and roadway improvement project this week on MD 223 (Woodyard Road) in Rosaryville, Prince George’s County. The $2.5 million project, which extends between Victoria Drive and Sherwood Drive, is expected to complete by the end of 2022.

Work on the project includes:

  • Construction of new sidewalks compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Widening of turn lanes for better vehicular capacity and traffic flow.
  • Stormwater facility and storm drain improvements for better roadway drainage.
  • Relocation of an existing 10-inch water main.
  • Upgraded traffic signal near Sherwood Drive with a new mast arm, new signal head and brighter, higher-visibility LED bulbs.
  • Asphalt resurfacing and new pavement markings.

Crews will work 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. During work hours, motorists can expect a single lane closure in both directions of MD 223. Additional work hours and lane closures may be needed to complete all phases of work and keep the project on schedule. MDOT SHA contractor A.J. Romano Construction of Laurel will perform the work.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. During sidewalk construction, pedestrians will be directed to the closest signalized crossing inside the project limits. Sidewalk users should stay alert for orange construction fencing, cones and barrels inside the work zone.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic flow for all users. Drivers must stay alert, pay close attention to pedestrians and bicyclists along the roadway and adhere to all traffic pattern changes inside the project zone. Pedestrians also should walk undistracted. with phones down and listening devices off.

Stranded motorists can dial #77 or 911 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
