Crews to Perform Weekend Repairs to Pipes Damaged in Recent Flooding

(October 13, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will make emergency repairs to drainage pipes under MD 355 (Urbana Pike) at Bennett Creek in Frederick County this weekend. The pipes were damaged in last week’s flooding.

Beginning 9 p.m. Friday, October 15, crews will close MD 355 in both directions between Thornapple Drive/Campus Drive and Doctor Perry Road/Big Woods Road. The work is expected to be complete by 5 a.m. Monday, October 18. A detour will be in place along the following routes:

  • Traffic on northbound MD 355 will be directed to use southbound MD 109 (Old Hundred Road) to northbound I-270, then take eastbound MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) to access MD 355.
  • Traffic on southbound MD 355 will be directed to use westbound MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) to southbound I-270, then take northbound MD 109 to access MD 355.

MDOT SHA will use electronic signs, cones and barrels to alert motorists about the emergency work, road closure and detour route.

The damage occurred on a temporary roadway that opened last year as part of an MDOT SHA project to replace a deficient bridge over Bennett Creek. Learn more on our Project Portal.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.

From intersection improvements to widening and new interchange construction, MDOT SHA is investing in projects to enhance the commute and daily travel for millions of Marylanders.  MDOT SHA maintains more than 2,500 bridges and 17,000 miles of non-toll state roads – the interstate, US and state numbered routes in Maryland’s 23 counties.
