24-Hour Lane Closures, Flagging Operation Required on Harford County Section

(July 1, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will temporarily close a section of southbound US 1 (Conowingo Road) on Harford County side of the Conowingo Dam Bridge beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 5. The closure of the roadway section just beyond the hydroelectric building will last up to 24 hours, weather permitting, and will allow crews to make repairs to steel beams.

The work includes bolting and welding new pieces of steel to existing beams. While the structure is safe for travel, the lanes need to be closed while the work is being performed.

During the work, a flagging operation will guide southbound drivers to alternate access on a northbound lane. Drivers are encouraged to use US 40 (Pulaski Highway) as an alternative until the lanes reopen on southbound US 1. Approximately 15,000 vehicles use this section of US 1 each day, but traffic volumes are lower during the evening and overnight hours.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers.  Please drive like you work here and stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other driving pattern changes.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
