Motorists Can Expect Partial Right-Turn Lane Closure Between Security Square Mall Entrance and I-695 Interchange Through Late June

(March 20, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is advising motorists of a temporary traffic pattern change to accommodate a BGE project on eastbound MD 122 (Security Boulevard) between Belmont Avenue / Security Square Mall Entrance and the ramp to southbound I-695 (Outer Loop) in Baltimore County.

The change will occur beginning 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 22. Once set-up is complete, the right-turn lane to the ramp from eastbound Security Boulevard to southbound I-695 will be partially closed for utility work. The interchange ramp will remain open, but drivers will have shorter access to the ramp after the work zone. All through lanes of eastbound Security Boulevard will remain open to traffic.

The pattern will allow BGE contractor W.A. Chester, of Lanham, to perform preventative maintenance on electric transmission cables underneath eastbound Security Boulevard. Weather permitting, the work will be complete in late June.

While the BGE utility work is underway, the sidewalk along eastbound Security Boulevard in the work zone will be closed to pedestrians. Pedestrians in this area will be able to cross over at the Security Square Mall Entrance/Belmont Avenue intersection and proceed along the westbound sidewalk, under I-695 and to the Whitehead Road intersection to cross back over to eastbound Security Boulevard.

The utility work supports BGE’s multi-year Electric Reliability Upgrade Project in the greater Baltimore area. BGE customers with questions may contact BGE project team member Elsa Arias at 240-583-7922 or email BGEProject@bge.com and refer to the “Electric Reliability Upgrade Project – Security Boulevard Spring 2023” in the email subject line. A member of the BGE project team will respond.

The State Highway Administration understands this new traffic pattern may inconvenience some travelers. The agency appreciates the public’s patience as it works to maintain safety in work zones for crews as well as motorists and pedestrians. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes, and slow down in construction zones.
