Sidewalk Improvement and Resurfacing Project Set to Begin Week of May 14

(May 3, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a $2.8 million safety and resurfacing project the week of May 14 on MD 195 (Carroll Avenue) between the Washington, D.C., line and MD 193 (University Boulevard) in Takoma Park.

The project is expected to be complete by summer 2024, weather permitting, and includes:

  • patching and resurfacing travel lanes;
  • installation of new pavement markers and signage;
  • cleaning existing drainage structures and pipes;
  • improving roadway drainage systems by constructing curb and gutters at north end of project in the northbound direction of MD 195; and
  • reconstruction of sidewalks for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, including sidewalk ramp improvements, bus stops and driveway entrance crossings.

To perform the sidewalk construction work, crews will perform a flagging operation, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays to guide motorists through the work zone. Pedestrian detours will route pedestrians to the opposite side of the roadway via pedestrian crossings, or direct them around the block. Any necessary nighttime work will occur 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.

Contractor F.O. Day, of Rockville, will use cones and barrels to guide motorists safely through the work zone. The State Highway Administration understands the work may inconvenience some drivers and pedestrians, but is necessary to maintain a safe and reliable transportation system.

With warm weather upon us, all motorists are urged to remain vigilant for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. Remember that motorcycles can be hidden from view in vehicle blind spots. Please look twice and save a life.
