(May 26, 2023) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will implement daytime shoulder closures along parts of I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) and some daytime lane closures on MD 122 (Security Boulevard) in western Baltimore County next week between Tuesday, May 30, and Friday, June 2. Additionally, there will be some temporary overnight lane closures along I-695 in that same time window.

The lane closures are a required part of the ongoing efforts to relocate utilities, install new roadside infrastructure, and relocate existing traffic barriers. These tasks are part of the I-695 Transportation Systems Management and Operations project from I-70 to MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard). Learn more about the project here

Beginning Tuesday, motorists can expect the following:

Daytime Lane Closures:

Southbound I-695 (outer loop) from I-83 to I-70 – Daytime closure of the right shoulder only will be needed between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, May 30-June 2, to allow for installation of Intelligent Transportation System hardware.
MD 122 (Security Boulevard) under I-695 – Daytime single-lane closures on westbound and eastbound Security Boulevard will be in effect between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, May 30-June 2, also for installation of Intelligent Transportation System hardware. Note: Concurrent with this project, BGE is continuing its underground electric line project 24/7 on eastbound MD 122 on the approach to the right-turn ramp to southbound I-695 (outer loop) through late June.

Overnight Lane Closures:

Southbound I-695 (outer loop) from MD 139 (Charles Street) to I-70 – A single right lane will be closed overnight only, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next day, Tuesday through Thursday, May 30-June 1, to allow for barrier wall installation/removal. There also will be some temporary intermittent left lane closures for similar barrier wall adjustments.

All work and lane closures are weather permitting. The State Highway Administration understands lane closures can be an inconvenience, but the work is necessary to maintain and improve the transportation system for all.
Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes, and slow down in construction zones. Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
