Work Temporarily Lowers Southbound I-95 Bridge Clearance from 16’ to 14’6’’

(April 12, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a project next week to clean and paint the bridge on bridge on Guilford Road over southbound I-95 in Columbia, Howard County. Crews will work overnight hours Sunday through Thursday through June when the project is expected to be complete.

The project will clean and remove old paint from the bridge. Crews will then apply new paint to the bridge to protect the structure against weather, corrosion and other forces that can cause damage. This type of maintenance is necessary to ensure the bridge has a long service life.

While the work is being accomplished, a protective shielding will be in place underneath the bridge that will lower the clearance on southbound I-95 from 16 feet to 14 feet, six inches. There will also be occasional single-lane and shoulder closures. The Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement system is being deployed to enforce the speed limit of 65 mph.
