(August 15, 2013) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a resurfacing project on I-95 in Howard County that will require lane closures between MD 32 (Patuxent Freeway) and MD 216 (Scaggsville Road) during overnight hours over the next month. Weather permitting, the project will be complete mid-September.

Motorists should anticipate lane closures Sunday nights through Friday nights, with single-lane closures beginning at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday nights and at 8 p.m. on Friday and Sunday nights. Double-lane closures are possible after 9 p.m. each night. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following mornings. SHA will use signs, cones and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone. During construction, the speed limit in the work area will be reduced to 55 mph.

The $2 million project  includes grinding (removing the top layer of asphalt), patching, paving and restriping approximately two miles of I-95 from the Little Patuxent River (just south of MD 32) to more than one-half mile north of MD 216.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to improve this section of I-95,” SHA District Engineer David Coyne said. “When this work is complete, the daily average of nearly 191,000 vehicles on this section of I-95 will travel on a smoother, safer surface with fresh, bright lines.”

SHA’s contractor for the project is American Infrastructure of Maryland, Inc. of Fallston. Anyone with questions about traffic operations on I-95 or other State numbered routes in Howard County may contact SHA’s District 7 office at 301-624-8100 or toll-free at 800-635-5119, or by email at SHADistrict7@sha.state.md.us.

This project was made possible with funding from the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013, which maintains crucial system preservation investments and allows Maryland to activate long-term strategies to invest in Maryland’s transportation systems. By putting people back to work in the transportation industry with $4.4 billion in new investments in the next six years, Maryland is creating hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity and providing Marylanders with the transportation infrastructure necessary to grow and prosper for decades to come.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
