(April 25, 2014) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning resurfacing work on several roadways in Montgomery County. Weather permitting, the $4.6 million work will be complete by late summer. The work is part of smaller areawide overlay resurfacing projects that will improve driving conditions for motorists who use these roads.

SHA will remove the top layer of asphalt, patch, resurface and install new pavement markings on the following:

• MD 355 (Rockville Pike) from Southwood Drive to Wilson Drive;

• MD 192 (Forest Glen Road) from Plyers Mill Road to MD 97 (Georgia Avenue);

• MD 188 (Wilson Lane) from MacArthur Boulevard to MD 190 (River Road);

• MD 188 (Wilson Lane) from Moorland Lane to Arlington Road;

• MD 115 (Muncaster Mill Road) from MD 124 (Woodfield Road) to Avery Road;

• MD 124 (Woodfield Road) from Woodfield School Road to MD 108 (Damascus Road);

• MD 191 (Bradley Lane) from West Avenue to MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) and;

• MD 117 (Clopper Road) from the entrance of Seneca State Park to Long Draft Road.

Crews will close a lane of traffic on roadways inside the work zones weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and up to two lanes, overnight, Sunday through Thursday, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. SHA will use variable message boards, temporary signs, construction cones, barrels and flagging operations to guide motorists through the work zones.

“This resurfacing work is critical for the preventative maintenance that will help preserve the life of these roads,” said Brian W. Young, District 3 Engineer.” Drivers will notice a vast improvement in the ride quality of these state highways once all phases of work are complete.”

Residents and travelers are advised that construction equipment can be loud and disruptive. SHA asks for the patience of the public as crews work to make improvements along the roads.

This project was made possible with funding from the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013, which maintains crucial system preservation investments and allows Maryland to activate long-term strategies to invest in Maryland’s transportation systems. By putting people back to work in the transportation industry with $4.4 billion in new investments in the next six years, Maryland is creating hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity and providing Marylanders with the transportation infrastructure necessary to grow and prosper for decades to come.

As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone.
