(February 25, 2015) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) strongly urges residents to assess the forecast and conditions early Thursday morning to determine whether to delay their commutes. Some forecast model updates are now showing the storm tracking more north with snow accumulation in the metro areas. SHA crews will be stationed and ready for the first precipitation; however, crews can only treat roadways effectively when they can move freely on roadways. If trucks are trapped in significant traffic, roadway conditions will only further deteriorate and become more hazardous.
“Another storm is forecast to strike the region during the busy morning commute and it only takes light to moderate snow to have a significant impact on the heavily traveled metro areas,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters.
“Traveling during a storm is discouraged. We urge commuters to be safe and delay travel, allowing SHA to clear the roads.”
While the best advice is to avoid travel until later in the day, if you absolutely must do so, keep in mind that visibility may be dramatically reduced so you should slow down, use caution and turn on headlights. Maryland law requires headlight use when wipers are in use. Never pass snow plows and allow plenty of following distance between you and SHA trucks treating roadways.
