Motorists Can Expect Overnight Lane Closures

(August 10, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is improving I-95 between the Baltimore City line and US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) and US 1 (Washington Boulevard) between the Howard County line and the CSX Railroad tracks in the Arbutus section of Baltimore County. MDOT SHA’s contractors will start work on the two separate projects mid-August and will complete construction summer 2018.

MDOT SHA will patch, mill (remove the top layer of asphalt), pave and stripe the 1.7-mile section of I-95 between US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) and the Baltimore City line. Other work includes improving highway drainage systems, guardrail upgrades and highway lighting repairs. This section of I-95 was last resurfaced in 2000.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, P. Flanigan and Sons, Inc. of Baltimore, will perform this $7.2 million project at night between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays. Motorists can expect single and double lane closures guided by barrels and arrow boards. More than 183,000 motorists use this section of I-95 each day so motorists are encouraged to plan extra nighttime travel time.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, Congressional Contracting, Inc. of Potomac, will patch, mill, pave and restripe the nearly one-mile section of US 1 between the Baltimore/Howard County line and the CSX Railroad tracks. Drivers can expect most of this $1.8 million project to be performed at night, Sundays through Thursdays between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Motorists will be guided through the work with barrels, cones and arrow boards. An average of 23,000 vehicles use this section of Washington Boulevard each day. This section of US 1 was last resurfaced in 1989.
