Rural Road Has Been Closed Since Heavy Rains in July

(August 13, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is preparing to open MD 137 (Mt. Carmel Road) south of Gunpowder Road, where a concrete culvert that carries Peggy’s Run was washed out last month. All travel lanes on Mt. Carmel Road should be open for motorists by the afternoon rush hour.

“Parts of Maryland experienced the wettest July in modern history and this resulted in a washout of the culvert,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Gregory Slater. “This was an excellent effort on the part of the crews, contractors and consultants to get the road open in an expeditious manner.”

MDOT SHA replaced the concrete culvert, constructed wing walls, added zip rap stone to prevent erosion and reinstalled guardrail. Crews also seeded the area to ensure that the soil near the culvert if stable.

This project was completed as July’s heavy rainfall impacted roadways across the state, particularly areas of northern Baltimore County and parts of Carroll County. Extremely heavy rain washed out the MD 137 structure and created high-water advisories on many MDOT SHA and local roads for days after the deluge.
