Tim Smith was named Administrator of the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) in June 2020. He had served as acting administrator since January 2020. He leads a 3,000-employee organization on its mission to provide a safe, well-maintained, efficient highway system that enables customers to connect to life’s opportunities.
Prior, he was a 21-year employee of MDOT SHA, where most recently he served as Chief Engineer and Deputy Administrator of Operations. In that role, he was responsible for all daily highway maintenance, construction and traffic operations across Maryland, which includes 17,000 lane miles of state roadways and 2,500 bridges.
Tim Smith has 26 years of experience in the field of civil engineering in both the public and private sector with a focus on transportation and materials. During his MDOT SHA career, he has served as district engineer for Anne Arundel County and Southern Maryland and as State materials engineer responsible for material quality assurance testing and design.
He graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Virginia Tech and is a registered professional engineer in Maryland. Tim Smith lives with his wife and three sons in Howard County, Maryland.
