BALTIMORE –The Maryland Food Bank and its partners, the Maryland State Police and the Department of Transportation, Charm City Run, Giant Food, and the Baltimore Ravens, kicked off Hunger Action Month 2014 at the food bank’s Baltimore headquarters.

“The face of hunger is changing and includes working Americans who don’t know where their next meal will come from,” said Maryland Food Bank President & CEO Deborah Flateman. “This month in particular, we’re encouraging people to ‘be a voice’ for this serious issue that affects 1 in 7 Marylanders.”

Throughout September, food banks across the nation are rallying to raise awareness and inspire action against hunger, an issue affecting an estimated 50 million Americans. Nearly 780,000 Marylanders experience food insecurity, and 38 percent in the Maryland Food Bank’s service area earn “too much” to receive SNAP food assistance benefits.

Deborah Flateman, President and CEO of the Maryland Food Bank, Colonel Marcus L. Brown, Superintendent of the Maryland State Police and Melinda B. Peters, Administrator of the State Highway Administration hold up their Be A Voice speech bubbles.
