Bridge Preservation Work to Enhance Safety and Connectivity from I-70/I-695 to Local Communities

(December 19, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has launched a $6.3 million project to rehabilitate the bridge carrying I-70 local over Ingleside Avenue in the Woodlawn area of Baltimore County. I-70 “local” is a section of the roadway east of I-695 near the park and ride lot (see map). This project is a part of the State Highway Administration’s Bridge System Preservation Program that supports the safety and mobility of Maryland travelers and maintains the state’s transportation network.

To improve safety and ride quality, crews will replace the eastbound and westbound bridge decks of I-70 local, remove the bridge deck and supporting beams of the median and perform rehabilitation work on the substructure. The project is expected to be complete in 2025, weather permitting.

During three stages of construction, lane shifts on I-70 local will be implemented to maintain traffic in both directions. Throughout the project, motorists should expect temporary daytime and nighttime off-peak hour lane and shoulder closures along I-70 local and underneath the bridge on Ingleside Avenue.

Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the east sidewalk along Ingleside Avenue, with a protective structure installed for the safety of users. Work may require closures during off-peak nights and weekends, as necessary. State Highway Administration contractor Brawner Builders Inc., of Hunt Valley, will perform the work. Learn more about the project here. This project is not part of the I-695/I-70 “Triple Bridges” Interchange Project.

The State Highway Administration understands that lane closures can be an inconvenience, and appreciates customers patience as this necessary work is completed. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes and slow down in construction zones. Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
